Baume & Mercier takes a contemporary approach to a traditional complication with the Clifton Baumatic Perpetual Calendar
Last year, Baume & Mercier caused quite a stir at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie Genève with the release of its Baumatic collection. The range features a brand-new calibre, BM12-1975A, created by fellow Richemont company ValFleurier. The industry was suitably impressed with B&M’s new calibre, featuring a silicon hairspring, high-performance escapement and five-day power reserve. At this year’s Geneva fair, the company built on that success by introducing the first complication in that range, the Clifton Baumatic Perpetual Calendar.
This timepiece is an enhanced version of its predecessor; the Swiss brand has added a perpetual calendar module to the BM13-1975AC-1, and presents it in a 42mm case made of satin-finished 18k red gold.
The complication functions form the heart of this timepiece. It indicates the day of the week at 9 o’clock, opposite the perpetual calendar at 3 o’clock. The moon phase indication appears at 6 o’clock, and at 12 o’clock is the month and leap year cycle. The watch takes the variable lengths of months and the leap year cycle into account automatically; the brand says the date doesn’t need to be corrected until March 1, 2100.
The Baumatic self-winding movement boasts a five-day power reserve while resisting the main magnetic fields of daily life. B&M proudly states it only needs to be serviced once every seven years, as opposed to every three-to-five years.
The Clifton Baumatic Perpetual Calendar sports a “warm white” porcelain dial and facetted riveted hour markers. Gold-tone hour, minute and seconds hands play off against the blue hands of the calendar functions. A domed antiglare sapphire crystal improves readability on the front; turn it around and the same material reveals the calibre’s finishes — including an openworked, gold-plated oscillating weight adorned with a decoration combining Côtes de Genève and snailing.
At only 12.1mm thick it’s a sophisticated and functional addition to the family.
Baume & Mercier presents the Clifton Baumatic Perpetual Calendar with a black alligator strap with an 18k red gold buckle. This elegant and contemporary take on a traditional complication is sure to find fans far and wide.
The film is described as a visual poem to the honorary chairman of TAG Heuer
