Brand Focus: Grenson

We catch up with the team behind the British label known for its designer handmade footwear

Be well dressed, behave like a gentleman, and keep your shoes shined. ~Joseph Abboud

Where does the name come from? The name Grenson was created more than 100 years ago as a shortened version of William Green and Son, which was the company’s original name.

How would you describe your brand’s aesthetic? Simple and classic with a modern edge.

What inspires the brand? Partly our own heritage but also many modern influences. It’s is the mix of new and old that creates our identity.

What goes into creating the perfect shoe? The initial idea is the most important thing, then the choice of last, the materials and the design of the upper. Finally, the choice of sole has to complement the upper.

What informs your choice of cut, material, print, colour etc.? Again it’s a mix of our own heritage and modern influences. If we do a shoe that is very modern but has no relevance to the brand then it won’t work, but if it’s just “old Grenson” it could be boring.

Do you have a flagship product, and what makes it stand out? I guess it’s the chunky brogue, but we see ourselves as being wider than that. We like the collection to have many highlights and not be centred around a single silhouette.

What do you think will be the next big revolution in your segment? The key is that you can never tell. At the moment it’s big, “ugly” sneakers but it could be anything. I think it will probably based on something from the past.

What about the Middle East market appeals to you? We love the fact that it’s different from the European or Far East markets, which makes it a challenge. We aren’t as well-known as a brand, so our shoes have to speak for themselves more. We love to get feedback about what works and what doesn’t.

How has the rise of e-commerce influenced your company and strategy? It’s transformed our business mainly because we can tell our story better online. We have a lovely story and make a high-quality product and now people can read all about it at the touch of a button.
