Debonair takes you to the top five barbershops you can trust to tame the manly mane
From hard graft boxes to luxury fitness suites, the Debonair guide to gyms in Dubai takes you to the best workout spots in the emirate
Getting in shape has never been easier. But choosing where to get your pump on, which iron paradise to clang and bang your way through — given the plethora of options available in Dubai today — has never been harder.
Sure, location and convenience are always factors to consider when signing up to three, four or even five weekly instalments of physical pain and gain. But, a good gym with the emirate’s best facilities and staff is worth travelling a bit further afield for.
When deciding to take on and, in some cases, transform your body type and your physical aesthetic, having a space and place you feel motivated to put in the hard yards is vital. From Crossfit-style boxes and the biggest gym in the emirate to the ultimate luxury workout environment, we’ve got you covered (in sweat by the end of your workout).
So, here’s our guide to the some of the best gyms for you work-hard-play-hard gents of Dubai.
The Gym, Business Bay
There can be little argument that this is the most luxurious gym in Dubai. There is some argument as to whether it’s the most luxurious in the Middle East. But you might well win that argument.
The self-assuredly named The Gym, based in Vision Tower in Business Bay, is decked out inside in zebra print, velvet cushions and an in-built bar (The Muscle Bar) just across from the resistance machines.
The luxe glamour interior is the work of South African interior designer Brian Lieb who decribes the concept as “a combined space where trendy, stylish boutique meets hardcore workouts with a bit of lounging about in between.”
We’ll stop short of saying this is a place we’re you go to admire how good you look while you’re bicep curling. And instead we’ll say it’s in a different league from the rough and ready industrial style warehouses of other gyms available in the region. But for the ultimate combination of luxury lifestyle and workout space, The Gym is the one.
FitRepublik, Dubai Sports City
Nestled in the appropriately named Sports City, FitRepublik is another haven of fitness. Their Olympic sized swimming pool, expansive power-lifting floors and high-tech equipment all speak to the fact that this is less of a traditional gym filled with dumbbell-lugging meatheads, and a state-of-the-art all-round sports and fitness facility.
From amateur to professional, FitRepublik’s strength lies in its community: all ability ranges welcome from someone looking to complete their first press up, to anyone looking to lift a PB their Olympic snatch.
Barry’s Bootcamp, Marina and DIFC
Now here’s one for the experienced class-goer and those who are not afraid to push themselves to their limit every time they step into the ominously red-lit environment of Barry’s aptly military-style named “bootcamp” — these guys will put you through your paces.
With 14 branches across the USA from Los Angeles to Boston, chains in London, Toronto, Bergen, Milan and Sydney, Barry’s settling in Dubai brings the original “results-driven” global workout ethic to Dubai. And when it’s all said and done, you will have earned your sweat stripes with Barry’s.
D5 Executive Gym, DIFC
James Heagney founded D5 with the intention of making fitness accessible to the corporate suits. For those of us who are money-rich, time-poor and who need an all round personal training package to cater to our lifestyles.
The gym is cosy and exclusive — running mainly on personal training sessions and not on a membership basis.
D5 has also launched the “Executive Express” workout: a high-intensity class offering a full-body workout in just 30-minutes which you can jump into at lunch and get back to work fully revived.
Gym Nation, Al Quoz
The biggest gym in Dubai. And though biggest doesn’t always mean best, it’s worth checking out for yourself before you make that judgement.
GymNation, also one of the youngest gyms in the Dubai fitness scene has everything you could ever want from any type of workout. From CrossFit box cages, farmer’s walks, Olympic rings, boxing rings, simple resistance machines, free weights… you get the idea. The list is exhaustive.
Though not in the echelons of luxury spaces, this is one for those gents unafraid of rolling their sleeves up and getting their hands dirty and mixing it up on a chalk-dusted gym floor.
