A weekend getaway at the Fairmont Fujairah’s new Lava Beach Club

With its striking red and orange pool, the Lava Beach Club offers luxury relaxation mere minutes from Dubai — and you can arrive by helicopter

We’re welcomed by the striking arabesque modernist design of what’s said to be Fujairah’s only art-inspired resort.

The journey is as important as the destination, they say, and with the UAE having become synonymous with luxury, how you arrive at your destination matters. Sure, people go the extra mile for VIP galas and red carpet events, but why should weekend getaways get left behind?

Landing mere metres from the Fairmont Fujairah Beach Resort’s new Lava Beach Club in a sleek Falcon Aviation helicopter sure turns heads. In much the same way, taking off from the brand’s property in Ajman doesn’t go unnoticed. In between, the stress of traversing the roads linking the emirates is replaced by the luxury of seeing the route from a different angle as the desert landscape gives way to the undulating topography of the Al Hajar Mountains.

We’re welcomed by the striking arabesque modernist design of what’s said to be Fujairah’s only art-inspired resort.

Nestled among the hidden valleys of the majestic Al Hajar Mountains, the Fairmont Fujairah Beach Resort is an art-focused property that juxtaposes modern bohemian elements and art-deco infused design with arabesque touches.

We’re welcomed by the striking arabesque modernist design of what’s said to be Fujairah’s only art-inspired resort. The property takes this claim seriously; you could spend hours poring over the canvases, sculptures and artefacts that blend seamlessly with the architecture to complement the interior design.

As cultured as that experience is, we’re here for an experience of a totally different kind, for the resort recently opened its beach club, anchored by the free-form swimming pool tiled in hues of red, orange and yellow (Lava, geddit?) that’s unmissable from the sky. The naming might be a bit on the nose, but the colouring is different enough to invite a revaluation of your understanding of beach clubs in the UAE.

The venue is modelled on beach club destinations such as Ibiza, Miami and Marbella, balancing a fun, laid-back vibe with luxury sophistication. Family-friendly days turn into adults-only nights with a DJ keeping the tunes flowing until 11pm. While cabanas have become de rigueur, the Lava club ups the ante with five poolside chalets, each equipped with a sofa, TV, mini bar, bathroom and outdoor lounge seating. The property also boasts what’s said to be the UAE’s only beach club with its own penthouse suite — the four-bedroom Lava Penthouse that overlooks the pool and is connected to its sound system. Its effortlessly chic décor mimics that of the other 180 rooms and suites, all facing either the marina or the Lava Beach Club.

The club is kitted out for relaxing days in the sun, with six in-pool Jacuzzis, a sunken pool bar, private beach and kids’ areas.

In addition to poolside dining, the resort’s food offering stands out for its focus on sustainability. Named after the Omani rock lobster commonly found in this region’s waters, the Copper Lobster serves stellar seafood, including the meatiest oysters I’ve ever had — sourced from a local supplier just minutes down the road. The venue also has a London-style gastro bar, where the mixologists dream up crazy inventions.

The European-style bistro Café Pronto is another highlight.

In true resort style, the Fairmont Fujairah Beach Resort has a whole host of activities for when you tire of lounging around. From early morning yoga sessions on the helipad to motorised and non-motorised water sports, there’s much to do on the property and surrounds. Going for a ride into the nearby town on one of the BMW bikes available to guests is highly recommended. Or you could tackle one of the hiking trails.

And with the time the 20-minute helicopter ride saves you, your weekend can be as jam-packed as you want. Or you could stake your claim on a sun lounger and be just as fulfilled.
