The eco-friendly garment, unveiled this week, is made from recycled drinks bottles
You can now rock a classic smart-casual look in designer form without any environmental-based guilt thanks to Ralph Lauren’s new Earth Polo shirt.
Made from recycled plastic bottles and dyed using a waterless process, the Earth Polo is part of the brand’s plan to remove 170 million plastic bottles from the world’s landfills and oceans by 2025.
Each shirt re-uses an average of 12 bottles, with men’s and women’s versions on sale from today (April 18) in four colours: white, navy, light blue and, most appropriately, green.
The Earth Polo was realised in partnership with First Mile, an organisation that works with entrepreneurs in low-income communities to collect recyclable plastic bottles for manufacture into high-quality yarn for fabric.
“Plastic waste is a major issue threatening the environment – we want to be part of the solution and utilise an innovative approach to create something valuable,” said David Lauren, the company’s chief innovation officer.
“When Ralph founded our company more than 50 years ago, he did so with the idea that whatever we create is meant to be worn, loved, and passed on for generations. It’s with this spirit of timelessness that we approach sustainability,” said Halide Alagoz, Ralph Lauren’s executive vice president, chief supply chain and sustainability officer.
It was launched in London at a cocktail event at Ralph Lauren’s flagship 1 New Bond Street store in Mayfair yesterday (April 17), in support of oceans charity Project O.
The Earth Polo is available now in Ralph Lauren stores and through its website.
