You don’t have to trawl through unending pages of dry prose to know a text well enough to fake your way through conversation
Don Quixote and Dorian Gray have never looked so stylish as in Loewe’s AW18 Classics collection
Your shelves are about to get the oft-illusive and previously chimerical combination of fashionable literature, thanks to Loewe’s collection of six literary classic texts.
It’s always gratifying when the spheres of high-end fashion and classic literature collide to good effect. On many occasions we’ve seen misquoted lines from a classics slovenly tagged onto a campaigns. And many a press release headline pun-on-a-classic has there been, too. We shan’t name and shame here. But Loewe is leaving the Classics as they are, in all their literary glory, giving them a stylish makeover and letting them speak for themselves from the pages of immortality. Nicely done, Loewe.
As part of the Spanish luxury fashion label’s Autumn-Winter ’18 campaign they’re publishing a set of limited edition literary classics. First revealed at its ready-to-wear fashion show in Paris earlier in the year, a total of six classics are getting the Loewe touch, and come presented in a eye-catching, shelf-ready box: perfect for when you have those sophisticated friends over who like to nose through your cultural identity signifiers.

The limited edition Loewe-published titles include: Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, Dracula by Bram Stoker, Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes, The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad and Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert.
But, should you get your hands on these cloth-bound hardcovers, take your time and enjoy each word on the page, heeding the narrator’s advise from Don Quixote: “Finally, from so little sleeping and so much reading, his brain dried up and he went completely out of his mind.” And Loewe doesn’t accept any responsibility for any dried up brains or ensuing insanity that may result from working your way through this well-intending collection of texts.
Each hardcover in the set of six features special sleeves adorned with elaborate Steven Meisel images originally published as part of magazine fashion editorials. The vintage Meisels have been repurposed for the book collection in a nod to the ongoing collaboration between the house and the photographer.
Produced in a limited run, the series — presented in an especially designed box — is available in select stores around the world.
