Always looking to the future

Tomas Alonso, CEO of BSH Home Appliances Middle East — distributor of Gaggenau, Siemens & Bosch — shares his favourite places and spaces in Dubai

I really identify and feel at home here, as walking on the beach at any time of the year gives me peace and an unparalleled sense of tranquillity.

The sight that inspires me the most is…

The Dubai Creek in Deira. All the boats waiting to load and navigate the creek, full of goods, like they have traded for 100 years ago. The visible contrast between the modern, futuristic city and the traditional beginnings of Dubai never ceases to amaze me.

The building I feel most connected to in the city is…

Definitely the Burj Al Arab. For me, this is the most iconic structure in Dubai — an enormous sail that extends out into the open sea, creating an architectural work of art that inspires and impresses.

A recent “find” is…

An amazing Arabic perfume shop in The Dubai Mall, as I’m a huge perfume fan with a heightened sense of smell. In this part of the world, we can smell such a beautifully diverse range of aromas, by simply walking past someone and taking in their distinctive scent. This shop has enabled me to really savour and experiment with fragrances that I wouldn’t usually be exposed to.

An object from outside my city that sits in my home is…

A large painting in my living room depicting the Bay of Santander, where I am lucky enough to call home. On a very storm day, in the north of Spain, winter time is really fantastic and the strong power of the sea is amazing and ferocious. This painting immediately transports me to my city.

On my coffee table you’ll always find…

My iPad and a box full of succulent dates. With both of these, I am able to disconnect momentarily from day-to-day life. Opening the iPad to browse the latest news while savouring the delicious dates is the perfect combination.

My favourite space in my city is…

The beach. Santander is a city completely exposed to the sea. I really identify and feel at home here, as walking on the beach at any time of the year gives me peace and an unparalleled sense of tranquillity, to relax and recharge my batteries.

The last gift I received from someone in the city was…

A limited-edition Montblanc fountain pen, from my wife to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary.

My next investment…

This is a personal project, that I’m currently keeping under wraps.

My last memorable trip was…

Ten days crossing South Island of New Zealand with my family in a caravan. 24 hours driving together, through amazing natural landscapes, glaziers and beaches, with my wife and three daughters was an amazing opportunity for family bonding and experiencing fantastic things together.

The thing I most look forward to coming back to is…

Definitely, my family. We have been living an expat life for 10 years, which means we are extremely close. When I’m away from home, I miss them a lot. For this reason, I love to return home and reunite with them.

The last thing that surprised me about the city was…

A futuristic video played at the Dubai Frame, with amazing images and vision about what Dubai will be like in 20 years. It is incredible how this city is always looking to the future all the time, constantly planning how to grow, expand and inspire.

If I didn’t live in my city I would live in…

For sure, Sydney. This city is modern, cosmopolitan, near the sea, with fantastic beaches and amazing weather.
