The Gentleman’s Guide to cufflinks

Advice on the dapper accessories from the boss of London jewellery masters Babette Wasserman

A man who wears cufflinks has thought about his outfit, has a good aesthetic and cares about detail and looking good.

Wearing cufflinks is a great way of showing that you pay attention to the details in your outfit and to express yourself and your personality. There are not as many types of jewellery a man can wear but a pair of cufflinks is a smart and manly way to accessorise yourself.

A man who wears cufflinks has thought about his outfit, has a good aesthetic and cares about detail and looking good.

Which cufflinks?

Think about what use or occasion you will have for this cufflink so that you can buy a pair that would be appropriate – although sometimes you should just be tempted by something that catches your eye.

For formal, we recommend matching the cufflinks to the colour of your suit. So if you are wearing black tie, stick to onyx, mother-of-pearl or sterling silver. It’s also very elegant to match your cufflinks to your watch. We have some beautiful 18kt rose-gold-plated cufflinks that would set off perfectly a rose gold watch.

For workwear, understated chic is always best. Our Industrial selection is a perfect match to a crisp white shirt. The Gatsby Check Cufflink and matching tie bar, which are all hand made in our factory in Birmingham, are cut on a lathe and plated with real rhodium – they will give you the perfect stylish and elegant business look.

For casual, we love recommending our Quirky range of fun and humorous cufflinks.

Styles

Within our collection we have three different styles. Our Quirky Cufflinks are whimsical, fun, beautifully intricate cufflinks that often have a sense of humour, while always being stylish. Cufflinks within this range include our infamous Balloon Dog Cufflinks, which have a little bone at the back, and Lobster Cufflinks, which is hand-enamelled with a metallic red enamel, and at the back has a pair of lobster crackers – how can you eat that delicious lobster?

Our Classic Cufflinks are made from hand-carved stones, skillfully set into different elegant shapes. Perfect for a business meeting, a smart dinner or as a special gift. We use interesting materials such as volcanic lava, or semi-precious stones such as mother-of-pearl, blue sodalite and onyx. We aim to find new and interesting manufacturing techniques to surprise our customers and make the most aesthetic and elegant-looking cufflinks, such as our Key Stone Cufflinks, which are black mother-of-pearl, laser-engraved with a classic British herringbone pattern. We also uses enamel in new ways, mixing it with other materials. Our Enamel Buttons are a real classic and bestseller – they have real cotton sewn into the middle of the cufflink and come in many different pop-coloured shades, such as yellow, navy, red, purple, green or grey.

Our Sterling Silver range is our most prestigious. It is made from solid silver and encompasses some very beautiful handcrafted techniques, including stone inlays. These cufflinks are perfect for special occasions or a very special gift – for the man who only likes the very best. Our new Maze cufflinks are entirely handmade, with our signature sterling silver oval back, hallmarked at the London Assay Office, with an Onyx and Mother of Pearl Hexagon Shape at the front, would perfectly complete the black tie outfit from any discerning dresser.

Size matters

We have a very international brand: we sell from London to Paris, New York, Dubai, Hong Kong, Japan... we even have customers in Nigeria and the Congo. If you ask me, does size matter, I would say absolutely. But the size will depend on what country you are from: our French customers like elegant and small, our American customer love big and bold, our African customers like gold and shiny, and there are many countries that fall in between with different tastes.

What else should you consider?

We have some wonderful reversible cufflinks, so for a businessman who travels a lot, these are ideal. It means they can bring just one pair of cufflinks and reverse them so it will look like they have multiple pairs of cufflinks.

I can bet you that if you had two men wearing the same suit and shirt, and one had cufflinks and the other a button-down shirt, nine out of 10 people would vote the better-dressed man would be the one wearing cufflinks.
