The Debonair guide to unleashing the adventure-hungry beast within
Every man has a bit of an adventure seeker or an adrenaline junkie in him, for, as the adage goes: Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. If you are a UAE resident, or even just visiting and are on the lookout for a death-defying pursuit to get your pulse racing to stratospheric levels, you’re in luck: the Emirates has much to offer the Adrenaline Junky, a creature usually spotted on cliff faces or the edges of planes waiting to jump.
Out here, there’s a plethora of hair-raising activities to enliven a dull weekend, or throw something unusual into the schedule other than the brunch, dr-unch or sun-downers you usually enjoy on a lazy weekend.
From skydiving and bungee jumping to zip-lining and snorkelling, there’re exciting options to experience the city by air, land and sea. All of which are your mission to take-one, if you choose to accept it. Put your adrenaline shots away, you won’t need them after ticking off this daredevil list. And for those of you with a nervous disposition, stop reading now.
Skydiving is an activity that every thrill seeker needs to do at least once in his lifetime. Falling 5,000ft at terminal velocity is often touted as the ultimate thrill-seeker’s top bucket list to-do.
An extreme sport enjoyed by both locals and tourists visiting the country, it’s a unique way to experience adventure. Apart from the intense rush of adrenaline of jumping from a plane, the view of the Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab is phenomenal.
You will free fall for about a minute or so until your instructor opens the parachute for a smooth descent for the next couple of minutes. Check out SkydiveDubai to book your session. You can get a good night’s sleep the night before knowing that you are in safe hands, as the instructors will have done over 200,000 jumps.
#2. Bungee jumping
When talking about thrill-seeking activities, bungee jumping is a must as there is nothing that can match the rush you feel from falling through the air after being thrown off from a great height — apart from skydiving. But this is a different kind of rush. There’s no instructor. No parachute. It’s just you and a rope that you hope holds your weight.
The rush you feel when falling lower and lower, until the cord around you jerks and cut the free fall is like staring Death in the eye and then flipping him off as you bounce back into Life's arms.
If you don’t have the guts to jump on your own, you can team up with a buddy or an expert so you can feel a bit more secure your first time. There are a few well-respected centres in Dubai for bungee jumping. One of the most popular one is Gravity Zone. You’ll be equipped with all the safety gears and be briefed at the centre before you enjoy your jump.

There are two options available in the UAE for this sport — in Dubai Marina and Ras Al Khaimah.
The RAK zipline is the longest in the world and measures 2.83km long (that is the same length as 28 football pitches) and 1,680m above sea level. Information regarding how to get there and about the sport is avaiable on its website.
For the one in Dubai Marina, you will need to register on the XDubai website before indulging in the activity. You will be able to get a beautiful view of the city and all of its iconic structures from above. This activity is moderately easy and can be enjoyed by almost anyone.
Snorkelling is one of the most fun water sports to indulge in while educating yourself about the marine life and enjoying the beautiful corals. Not to mention, it is also a great activity to do with a couple of friends, your partner or even your kids as anyone over the age of 8 years is able to take part.
The activity is available in a lot of beaches and resorts. Fujairah has quite a few locations avaiable for snorkelling and offers one of the best experiences. Atlantis The Palm is one of the best places in Dubai to go snorkelling as the resort boasts a private beach and is home to The Lost Chambers Aquarium.
#5. Dirt biking
Every thrill-seeker has to indulge in this activity with a group of friends, and Dubai is a great place to experience it. Pump up your adrenaline and feel the thrill while riding off roads into the sand dunes.
Dirt biking is available in the fossil Rock desert, Jebal Ali and Big Red Dunes. This sport can be a bit challenging for beginners, since you will have to perfect your balance on the sand. However, with experience the sport becomes more fun.
