The UK-based fashion designer talks food, drink and all things London
Home is… right next to London Fields. I’ve always lived around there. I love living at the top of my square because I get keys to the garden, but I’m not directly responsible for it.
Who do you call when you want to have fun? It usually starts with my other half, Philip, or my [twin] sister Sara.
Where do you go to let your hair down? The bar at J Sheekey.
Your favourite London shops? Donlon Books on Broadway Market — they often go to Japan and get the most wonderful things. Thomas Goode, which is across the street from my store on South Audley Street, for everything from Viennese glass to beautiful porcelain plates. And Dover Street Market’s top floor for Labour and Wait’s Welsh blankets.
Best party or celebration that you’ve been to in London? My 40th birthday in November — it involved a light-up dancefloor overlooking The Mall.
What would you do if you were Mayor of London? I would ban cars and mobile phone reception, which means we’d have to look at the city and talk to each other.
Best bites in the UK capital? St John on St John Street for the bone marrow on toast and ox heart salad — I love offal. For Sunday lunch and a pint of Guinness, The Marksman on Hackney Road, and for breakfast, the Rawduck in Hackney. They do a really great sage and anchovy cracked eggs.
Bus, Tube or taxi? The Overground.
What are you currently binge watching? I’m either watching the second series of The Crown or old episodes of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Last album you downloaded? Maria Callas. It’s wonderful during fittings. It keeps me going.
Your biggest extravagance? My book I’m slowly going to become a prisoner in my own library.
Aside from books, do you collect anything else? Photographs by Wolfgang Tillmans, Candida Höfer and Rineke Dijkstra.
If you could buy any building in London, which would it be? The Royal Opera House — there’s always something amazing happening.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Probably from my mum: “Keep calm and carry on.”
What are you up to right now? I am working on designing for my first ballet for Christopher Wheeldon at the Royal Opera House. It’s going to premier in March. That’s exciting.
